Linda Young ignored some early warning signs and symptoms before ultimately finding out that she was carrying a fifteen pound tumor in her abdomen. Here's Linda telling her story. Transcript: My story started last spring, late spring. I started noticing some really disturbing symptoms, and I knew something wasn't right. So I forged ahead for a few more months, and then I went to the gynecologist for my annual exam. And I was very alarmed when I saw her face. She sent me for abdominal ultrasound and a pelvic ultrasound. When she did get the results, she called and texted and emailed my office phone within 10 minutes and told me that I had an appointment at Markey Cancer Center with Dr. Ueland in 2 and 1/2 hours. I hung up the phone, and it was like the wind had been knocked out of me. She said I had a very large ovarian mass. The tests showed that it was 30 centimeters, which is the size of a football. Dr. Ueland's wonderful. He came in with a big smile on his face and told me, I'm not overly concerned that it's malignant. We won't know until we get in there. This is going to be a tough surgery. I mean, he didn't sugar coat it-- this is going to be a tough surgery, but we're here for you. We're with you. We're going to get through this. So then I had a week of waiting. And that was probably the hardest week of my life. The emotions-- just the ebb and flow of-- I couldn't sleep. It was terrifying. That week was horrible. It weighed about 15 pounds-- the tumor itself did. Dr. Ueland estimated that it weighed about 15 pounds. The pathology came back that it was 29 by 10 centimeters, so it was football-sized. I'm sitting in my recliner watching TV and my phone rings, and it's Dr. Ueland. And he said, I have some good news for you, Linda. And I said, what's that? And he said, no cancer. All of the tissue came back-- no malignancy. We found no cancer cells. During recovery, I was thinking of my grandchildren. I'd hoped to see my grandchildren go off to college, marry, do whatever they wanted to do in their lives-- possibly even hold my great-grandchildren someday. And the thought that I might not be able to do that, that was terrifying. And none of us have the promise of tomorrow. So it makes life really sweet, when you go through something like that.
