It marks the beginning of summer and fertility. Originating from Gaelic Beltaine, it historically honoured the god Belenus and the goddess Belisama. Today, it’s celebrated primarily in Scotland, particularly in Edinburgh, where it has evolved into a spectacular event. On the night of April 30th, thousands gather atop Calton Hill to witness a mesmerising spectacle. Attendees adorned in elaborate costumes representing ancient Celtic characters participate in a procession illuminated by torchlight. Drummers set the rhythm, and fire dancers captivate the crowd with mesmerising performances. The festival’s centrepiece is the symbolic lighting of the Beltane Fire, representing the sun's ascent and the earth's awakening.
