Today marked a bittersweet milestone for all of us at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum — Southern 630’s final day operating on the Missionary Ridge Local. After years of faithful service and countless miles under her drivers, she’s heading toward her federally mandated 1,472-day (or 15-year) inspection. Tomorrow, Sunday, November 2nd, will officially mark her last day in service before she’s taken out of operation for the detailed teardown and inspection every operating steam locomotive must undergo. The crew today was a great one: Andrew at the throttle, Rikki firing, Brady serving as conductor, and Jason as trainman. Together, they kept 630 running like the living, breathing piece of history she is. Each trip across the ridge felt special — the steady beat of her exhaust echoing through the tunnel, the sharp bark of her whistle drifting over the valley, and the smiles of passengers who might not realize they were witnessing a moment of history.
