This video shows you how the windscreen wipers (or windshield wipers) work in a Tesla. It's a beginners guide to using the wipers and will not only help new Tesla owners, but existing Tesla drivers may learn something too! They're a bit different to other cars, especially the newer Teslas that don't have an indicator stalk or a button on the end of the stalk. The newer cars have a wiper button on the steering wheel, but it works the same as the button on the stalk in older cars. Many Tesla review videos and new drivers mistakenly think you need to use the settings on the screen to operate the wipers. But once you're used to them, you do need to look at the screen at all to adjust the wipers. Ever since Tesla stopped fitting rain sensors in new cars in 2018 and instead used the front facing cameras (vision system) to detect rain, their auto wipers have never worked as well. However, over the air updates in 2025 made significant improvements and they're now pretty good. I made this video • How do Tesla AUTO WIPERS differ from other... showing some examples of the auto wipers working in various types of rain and they're now pretty good. However, its the dry wipes or what feels like unneeded wipes which confuse drivers and this is because they forgot that the wipers aren't just there to clean the glass for the driver, but also for the cameras at the top of the screen. So if you use Autopilot, Auto Park or Summon, the car will take over the wiper control. If your glass in front of the cameras is dirty, not just on the outside, but also on the inside, this can cause excess wipes. You've only got to consider the dirty film you get on the inside of the windscreen to realise how the camera's view could be impeded. The cameras are not sealed as there's a slot on the underside of the plastic shield to allow airflow. So if your car is more than a year old, dirty glass could be the cause. The same goes for bugs, smears or minute chips externally. Tesla now offers a "Windshield camera area precision cleaning" which you'll see under Request service, Maintenance in your app. They clean both the external and internal glass surfaces in front of the cameras. This probably needs doing every 12 months at least, especially if you use Autopilot or FSD..
