Session Moderator : Lucia Bruesgan, Chair Inernational Biochar Initiative (IBI) Biochar has moved from niche practice to being a scalable climate and agricultural solution and Africa is emerging as one of its most compelling frontiers. This panel examines how biochar deployment has grown across Africa and globally, what it is already delivering on the ground, and where the real opportunities lie next. With abundant waste biomass, strong potential to displace synthetic fertilizers, and a critical need for climate resilience solutions, Africa offers structural advantages few regions can match. Yet challenges remain: limited access to project finance, infrastructure gaps, and execution risk. How can these barriers be overcome? The rapid growth of the carbon removal market - driven by rising demand for durable removals and greater market integrity - has brought new visibility and credibility to biochar carbon credits. The conversation will be driven by companies spear-heading the certification of Biochar carbon credits, CSI, Crystalchain, and Puro.earth who will discuss how projects, standards, buyers, and investors are creating new pathways for African projects to scale. This discussion focuses on what is working, what is not, and what it will take to seize the next wave of opportunity.
