I explain a Radeon 6970M video card compatibility problem used in a late 2009 27" iMac. Repasting helps but doesn't completely solve the sudden power-down problem. (Sorry about the background noise, but that's Japan for you!) 🏥 PROBLEM: The 6970M causes the iMac to suddenly power-off when the video card gets too hot, unlike the stock 4850 video card which would never kill power to the Mac. Before repasting, the iMac would shut-off at around 52°C or 61°C, depending on the software running. After repasting (with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on the GPU and K5 Pro on the memory chips), the GPU Heatsink temperature at which the shutdown would occur became 77°C. This is still a problem though because the iMac shouldn't suddenly shutoff at all. I therefore cannot recommend the 6970M in 2009 or 2010 iMacs. I will retain mine though for further testing and to at least be able to use my iMac. 🎥 My previous video on the 6970M: • AMD 6970M upgrade for 2009 iMac 27" [... 👕 Apple T-Shirt worn in this video is a shirt I've had since my college days, acquired sometime around 1990. My BAKE VIDEOS are here: https://bit.ly/2UEOf4o 🔥 THERMAL PASTES I strongly recommend: K4 & K5 Pro Kit: https://amzn.to/38WkEZO or K5 Pro (for chips other than GPU): https://amzn.to/33OIDJ6 & Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (for GPU only): https://amzn.to/36NMQwu 😎 Fan Control & Temperature Viewer Apps to keep your iMac running cooler -- I can vouch for all of these: • Macs Fan Control: https://crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control • smcFanControl: https://www.eidac.de • iStat Menus: https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/ 🛠 TOOLS to open/close iMac: • 2 strong suction cups for front glass removal: https://amzn.to/2tkcmvJ • Torx T10 for LCD removal (T9 works but T10 is best) & T9 for video card removal. The following kit contains more than needed for the iMac, but it's highly rated, has grippy handles and magnetic tips, and no 1 month+ wait from China: https://amzn.to/2UCaurK or Alternative kit, WRENCH style (cheaper): https://amzn.to/2wIgWWe or Alternative kit, BIT style (you'll need a handle): https://amzn.to/2vRkUeC 🔦 OTHER ITEMS needed or recommended: • Anti-static wrist strap (connect wire to earth ground): https://amzn.to/2uSTy74 • Dust blower - Giottos Rocket Blaster Large: https://amzn.to/2OgHHXt • Microfiber cloth (for cleaning the screen/glass) • Flashlight (to peer into the dark spaces inside the iMac) ► I used a Samsung EVO 850 1TB SSD to replace the stock Apple hard drive, but the 860 EVO or Crucial MX500 are equivalent. To use an SSD in late 2009 27" iMac, you'll also need a special mounting bracket and a separate temperature sensor: • Bracket: https://amzn.to/37Zn4qg • Sensor for 2009-2010 iMacs: https://amzn.to/3b3knWU • EVO 860 (1TB): https://amzn.to/2RKem9M or • Crucial MX500 (2TB): https://amzn.to/3bxHybf 💵 NOTE: Your price on Amazon (US only) is the same even if you don't click the "amzn.to" Affiliate links above, but if you do kindly click and purchase within 24 hours, Amazon may pay me a small commission on all qualifying items in your Cart (even items not linked above). 💰SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL If you wish to buy me a drink or otherwise support my content creation: https://www.paypal.me/supportJDW 🙏 My sincere thanks to the following Paypal subscribers since the end of March 2020 to present: • Cesar Cedraro • Owen Roberts • James Hart • Jim Mihori Jim Mihori is a ukulele instructor, musician, and treasurer of a nonprofit Hawaiian cultural school in Arlington, VA called Halau O 'Aulani.
