Edo Wins Niger Delta Games Despite Disqualification Row

Team Edo has emerged overall champions of the 2nd Niger Delta Games after hosting the multi-sport event in Benin City, topping the medals table with 52 gold medals and 111 total podium finishes. With more than 3,000 athletes from nine states competing across 17 sports under the sponsorship of the Niger Delta Development Commission, the Games were widely praised for organisation and competitive intensity. However, celebrations were tempered by the disqualification of 10 Edo athletes, raising questions about eligibility checks, compliance protocols and administrative oversight. While the state celebrates a historic double as host and champion, the focus now shifts to governance standards and sustainability.
