In this episode of Franci Talks Japanese Art History we go back to the very beginning, as we explore the fascinating world of Jōmon pottery, some of the oldest ceramics in the world, dating back over 10,000 years. We will explore Jōmon pottery ranging from simple cord-marked patterns to sophisticated flame vessels (kaen-doki), discovering prehistoric Japan's artistic techniques and aestethics. In this educational deep dive, we’ll cover the chronology of the Jōmon period (ca. 14,000–300 BCE), the techniques and materials used by Jōmon potters, and hypotheses about the symbolism and uses of the vessels.
