CHOP and PROP with me | Plant Propagation 101

Did you know that you can make your plants more full and / or create new plants for yourself or as gifts? I'll show you how to propagate your plants with five different methods: soil, water, sphagnum moss, perlite, and LECA. I'll also explain how each method differs from one another. Luckily, you likely have a majority of the supplies for each of these plant propagation methods already in your home. 🌱 What is plant propagation? It is the process of making new plants. You can do this using various plant parts such as seeds, cuttings, etc. ✂️ How to start plant cutting? When you have a vining plant, you can make cuts between the nodes. A node is the part of the plant where a new leaf begins to grow. I like to leave an inch or two from the node just in case it begins to rot and I need to give it a quick trim. If you have a succulent, you can take a cutting from one of the leaves. For my ZZ raven, i'll pluck one of the leaves. Make sure you let your cuttings air dry for a few hours so the edges harden. This will help mitigate potential rot as you're propagating. 🪴 Soil Propagation Method: There are two ways that I soil propagate. The first involves taking cuttings from the plant and sticking it directly into the soil. The second involves arranging the vine with various nodes on top of the soil and securing it with bobby pins. Just make sure to give you plant water whenever if needs it and over time, the nodes will activate and give you new growth. This is extremely helpful if you are trying to make your plants more full. 💦 Water Propagation Method: This is one of the most common forms of propagation. You grab a tall vessel, fill it with water, and stick your plant cutting inside. Some people suggest changing the water every day, but I'm lazy. I change it every week or so. 🍃 Sphagnum Moss Propagation Method: This one is my tried and true. You take sphagnum moss, submerge it in water, and ring out the excess water. You want the moss to be moist, but you don't want it drenched and dripping water. You'll take the sphagnum moss and gently wrap it around your plant cutting's node. You can put this in a small plastic cup or glass jar. Up to you! I also like to put the container in a ziploc bag so it get extra humidity. ⚪️ Perlite Propagation Method: Perlite is volcanic glass that retains high water content. Make sure to wash your perlite in a ventilated area before using it. All you need to do is place the perlite in a closed container such as a glass or cup and put your cutting inside. You'll need to fill the container 1/3 full of water. Just a small bit. 🟤 LECA Propagation Method: LECA stands for lightweight expanded clay aggregate. In other words, they are clay balls that expand when you soak them in water. Similar to the perlite, make sure to rinse your LECA. The water should go from brown to clear. That's when you know you're done. After that, fill a container with LECA, place your cutting in the middle make sure to fully cover the cutting with LECA, and fill the container 1/3 with water.
