Roger Corman never went to film school. But under his leadership, he has seen countless actors, writers, directors, and producers get their start in the industry. WE HAVE MERCH! He saved money on crew by unloading the equipment himself, he saved money on cars by borrowing from lealerships for a test drive. A deal with American International Pictures gave him freedom to make films and keep making films, playing to a teen market that had gone largely untapped. Keen to become a better director, Corman took an acting class, where he met a struggling young actor named Jack Nicholson and gave him his first film role in 1958 The Cry Baby Killer. After 9 films together Nicholson came to Corman with a script he’d been developing with his friends, Peter Fonda – whom Corman had saved from becoming a family movie star by casting him in The Wild Angels – and Dennis Hopper – the first victim in Corman’s Queen of Blood. But American International wouldn’t accept Hopper as director, so Corman missed out on what would have been the biggest success of his career, and the three actors became the first graduates of Corman U – taking the lessons they had learned under the master of the low budget filmmaking and ploughing them into their own cut-price masterpiece, at the same time ensuring they would never have to work at that level again A special thanks to our Dark Cultist Patreon supporters.
