The first huge Winter swell of the year is here! Join Patrick from the social team to watch as massive waves roll down Cannery Row and pound the back deck of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This swell is 20 plus feet with a period of around 20 seconds, meaning the waves are not only big by themselves, but the long period makes the wave energy drag on the reef and rear up into massive wave faces. These winter storms typically decimate the kelp forest, tearing out plants and resetting the scenes for the next year. The ripped out kelp either heads offshore to become a nursery for fishes, or is thrown to the beach to become a pantry for migrating shorebirds, or sinks to the deep sea to feed the hungry invertebrate community that waits nearly all year for this nearshore mana to fall. When the waves are up, sea otters tend to seek sheltered coves or head further offshore. Many otters wind up off the back deck of the Aquarium, where patches of kelp seem to hold on better than the rest of Cannery Row. ____ Whale hello there! We hope you liked this video.
