Carolina Ferreira-Atuesta, MD, MSc, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, shares the findings of a large, multicenter cohort study investigating factors that increase the risk of acute symptomatic seizures and post-stroke epilepsy after acute ischemic stroke. The results from over 4000 participants showed that stroke severity, location, and etiology were all associated with post-stroke seizure risk. Acute symptomatic seizures and post-stroke epilepsy were seen more commonly in those with severe strokes, posterior cerebral artery territory or cortical involvement, and strokes caused by large artery atherosclerosis. No association was seen between the use of reperfusion therapy and seizure risk. This interview took place at the American Epilepsy Society (AES) Annual Meeting 2022 in Nashville, TN.
