Jamie Allan has been a Program Director of scientific ocean drilling programs at the National Science Foundation (USA) for more than two decades. In this interview excerpt, he reflects on his experiences in management positions at the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP, 1985-2003), the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP, 2003-2013) and the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP, 2013-2024). He also offers insights on the lessons learned from the first IODP that helped improve the structure, management, and modes of collaboration for the second IODP.
