In this video, we look at a topic somewhat more contentious, the late lamented Buddhas of Bamiyan, two gigantic monoliths depicting the celestial deities of the Buddhist faith that were once hewn straight from the side of the Bamiyan cliffs in central Afghanistan, and were revered for over a millennia by both members of their own faith, but also the Islamic religion that would come to dominate the country. Sadly, the Bamiyan Buddhas would have no place in the future of Afghanistan under the hostile rule of the fundamentalist Taliban, and during 2001, the two statues were decimated by weeks of gunfire and explosives, leaving only their forlorn and empty niches standing idle in the now vacant cliff face.
