MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A fish kill on the North Fork River could impact a bigger body of water and a major tourism draw in McDowell County. Wednesday night, a fisherman spotted hundreds of dead fish, frogs and snakes at a 2-mile stretch near American Thread road. That has local, state, and federal agencies scrambling to get to the bottom of the mystery. Experts collected more samples from the river. The sheriff's office says if the water there is deemed unsafe, they may need to close Lake James to visitors. "It'd be a big disappointment to a lot of people," says George Thomason of Rutherford County. "It's heavily used on the Fourth of July." "Our major concern is whether or not the waterway is safe for the citizens," says Richelle Bailey of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office. "Especially since we have a lake here and with it being Fourth of July weekend we need to know that so we can let folks know." A no-swim advisory has been issued for North Fork River to Burnette's and Lake James Landings. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: / news13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: / wlos_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: / wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Cha...
