HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- E-cigs could be the new way to smoke pot -- the oil used is odorless and almost impossible for police to tell the difference. "It's hard to conceal a bong in the passenger compartment of a car," Henderson County Sheriff Charles McDonald said. "But you can smoke an e-cigarette walking down the street." This fact presents new challenges for law enforcement "I think in Colorado we've seen that there's a major increase in overdose in children 12 and younger and a significant increase in driving while impaired," McDonald said. "It's more difficult to catch and yet it's more convenient I think for people to do." With more states legalizing medical and recreational marijuana use, e-cig manufacturers are recognizing the huge potential. Josh Kimmel, founder and CEO of Breathe e-Cig in Knoxville, has just launched a deal to market a new device for vaping cannabis oil made from hemp and legal in all 50 states. "It also doubles as a medical delivery device for not only cannabis based products but antihistamines," Kimmel told News 13. But, it is also clear these devices could easily be loaded with THC oil -- a product legal in Colorado and Washington, available online and on the black market. Kimmel says his new venture is focused on the medical and therapeutic benefits, but that includes THC. Critics believe the real intent is to position e-cigs to expand into the THC market as more states consider legalization. McDonald says vaping pot presents a new and hidden danger. "You have people who are becoming impaired and until something tragic happens, we may not know that that's going on so it's hard to intervene and stop it," McDonald said. Some communities have moved to ban e-cigs in any form. The city of Asheville recently outlawed their use on city buses, buildings, parks and greenways.
