If you want to become a Judge in India, what steps do you need to follow? A Judge’s main responsibility is to understand the law and deliver fair judgments based on what’s right and wrong. To become a judge, you can choose any stream in 11th and 12th — Arts, Commerce, or Science. But after 12th, you must have a Law degree (LLB) — and there are two ways to get it. The first option is a 5-year Integrated LLB course, which you can pursue right after 12th — like BA LLB or BCOM LLB. The second option is a 3-year LLB course, which is available only after completing a Bachelor’s degree in any field. Once you finish your LLB, you need to register with the State Bar Council and work for about 3 years as a lawyer or law clerk. After gaining this experience, you can appear for the Judicial Services Examination. This exam has three stages — Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Candidates who clear all stages and make it to the merit list are selected for training. After around one year of training, you’ll get your first posting as a Civil Judge (Junior Division). A Civil Judge’s salary ranges from ₹77,000 to ₹1,36,000 per month. From there, you can be promoted to become a District Judge, and later even a High Court or Supreme Court Judge.
