Now it's time to start restoring the individual suspension components from my 1973 Opel Manta A! In this video, I remove the lower ball joints, as well as all the original rubber bushings from the front upper & lower control arms, rear trailing arms, and everything else. I also salvage the inner metal sleeves from the old bushings, because the new polyurethane bushings either don't come with new ones, or have different bolt sizes. Next , I go to work on stripping the old paint and rust from the control arms and other parts. I start with a variety of wire wheels on a bench grinder and hand drill, some Scotch-Brite pads, and other abrasives by hand, but can't get 100% of the rust that way. So I get a bucket of Evapo-Rust and soak the parts overnight. This works very well, and I can then do final prep and spray the parts with some nice fresh VHT satin black chassis paint. With cleanup operations continuing, my next plans are to fit the new bushings and put things back together! But first, some modifications will be needed to the new aftermarket poly bushings, and I'll have to do something with the old rusty hardware that came off.
