CP 2816 Royal Hudson - The Empress - Calgary to Edmonton - 16 locations - Oct 17, 2023

CP 2816, an H1b 4-6-4 Royal Hudson built by Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930, has recently been restored to service by CPKC to celebrate the merger between CP and Kansas City Southern. Prior to embarking on cross country tour in April 2024, the steam locomotive has been making test runs across the Alberta countryside. On one of her final trips this year, the 2816 made a trip to Edmonton on October 17, 2023. We caught up with the 2816 leaving her home base at the legendary Ogden Shops in Calgary and followed to train north to Edmonton. The rainy weather eventually gave way to beautiful sunshine, however in true Alberta fashion it was extremely windy. We caught the train at 16 spots along the Red Deer and Leduc Subs: Ogden, the Bow River, Balzac, Crossfield, Didsbury, Olds, Niobe, Innisfail, Red Deer River, Red Deer, Blackfalds, Wolf Creek, Maskwacis, Millet, Kavanagh and shoving into the South Edmonton Yard. As well, we caught a few of the freight trains they were contending with.
