Alberta had the first major Ukrainian pioneer settlement in Canada in the late 19th century. Ukrainian farmer-pioneers mostly from western Ukraine, which at the time was part of the Austrian Empire helped to open up and settle the prairies and introduce agriculture to the region. Siberia in Russia also had agriculture introduced to it by pioneer Cossack settlers whose ancestors came from Ukraine. They established many towns and villages and reached Alaska from the west before it was purchased from Russia by the USA. Although respected before the revolution, since communism took over Russia in 1917 the Marxists made several genocides against Cossacks and Ukrainians, including 3 major mass Holodomor famines (1921-23, 1929-34, 1946-47), collectivization-confiscation of private property, deportations, gulags and other abuses, causing a lot of suffering. Russia's war against Ukraine since 2014 has devastated and depopulated south-eastern Ukraine which is traditionally a Cossack area. Kherson - a city in southern Ukraine was completely starved out by the communists in 1922, and then brutally occupied by the Russian army 100 years later in 2022, and flooded by them in 2023 when they destroyed the Kakhovka Dam. The traditionally Cossack areas in south-eastern Ukraine devastated by the Russian invasion and occupation from 2014 faced a major famine in 1921-23 which was turned into a genocide by the Soviets through additional forced food confiscation and denial of international food aid. A century later they are continuing the abuses and genocide of the population in the region, this time with false claims saying that they came to-supposedly protect it. Much of the adult male population was forcibly conscripted and thrown into high casualty human wave attacks against the Ukrainian army. Many children have been taken and adopted in Russia. Schools in the occupied areas reverted back to teaching Soviet propaganda. Russia is still a neo-Soviet country in 2025 and has hardly removed any of it's Lenin statues and still has a lot other communist symbolism dominating public spaces left over from the Soviet period. President Putin even had a statue of Stalin erected in the Moscow subway, who was the most brutal Soviet dictator and one of the worst in human history, responsible for tens of millions of deaths through gulags, slave labour death projects like the White Sea Canal, mass genocidal starvation, indiscriminate mass executions of innocent people based on quotas, many wartime abuses against civilians, deportations of tens of millions of people, and many other human rights abuses. Stalin is like the devil incarnate. Stalin's statues and images were taken down decades ago in the Soviet Union and his abuses condemned even back then. By rehabilitating Stalin, President Putin is bringing back the darkest period of Soviet history. The extent of the evil shows that communism is a form of political satanism, turning everything upside down and making heroes of the worst people. Thankfully western countries have been helping Ukraine in its struggle for its freedom and independence. Since 2014 Ukraine went through a de-communization process and removed most of the communist monuments, street names and monuments from public spaces. The only remaining lenin statues in Ukraine dominating public squares are in areas occupied by Russia.
