A very distinctive element of shamisen prepared for Tsugaru style is the wide overhang of skin around the sides of the dou. This overhang is much wider than that of shamisen set up for classical styles (nagauta, jiuta, etc), and many assume the tighter skin of Tsugaru style requires extra overhang to keep it held down. While this is only partially true to a small degree, many folks misunderstand the real reason for it, as they don't know the historical purpose behind it. Today, we'll find out!
