Chaocipher – The Cipher Nobody Wanted

#cryptology, #cryptography, #cryptanalysis Chaocipher was invented by John F. Byrne in 1918 and described in his 1953 autobiography "Silent Years". He tried to propose his cipher for several years to government authorities, but he had not success. Byrne kept the internal workings of his cipher secret. Only in 2010 when all of his Chaocipher papers were donated to the National Cryptologic Museum (NCM), the internal workings became publicly available. Despite Byrne's believs that the cipher is unbreakable, George Lasry developed a divide-and-conquer attack to easily break Chaocipher (ciphertext-only). In this video, we have a look at the background of the Chaocipher and we learn, how the cipher actually works. Finally, we have a look at the implementation of Chaocipher in CrypTool 2.
