Welcome to Yescapa's Road Tips, our series of tutorials on life in a motorhome, campervan or converted van. Check out all our tips to make sure you have everything you need for your road trip! In today's tutorial, we're showing you the safest way to connect to electricity and more precisely how a campervan's electric hook up works. Let's to break it down into 5 steps: Step 1: To get started, you'll find a special extension lead in the campervan to hook up to electricity in a service area, campsite or at a homestay. The plug has a male and a female end. Step 2: Locate the campervan's power socket on the outside of the vehicle and insert the female end of the extension lead by lifting the socket cover. Then plug the other end of the extension lead into the electric hook up point. To connect to the power supply, you will sometimes need to use an adaptor, depending on the type of socket or the country you're travelling in. These adaptors are usually included in your vehicle's accessories. If you have any doubts, don't hesitate to ask the owner for advice. Step 3: Once your campervan is connected to the electric hook-up point, the relevant devices will automatically switch to the new power source. Inside the vehicle, you'll often find a 220V power socket for charging your devices, which will only work if you're connected to electricity. In some vehicles, you may need to activate a switch or circuit breaker to get the power flowing. Step 4: When you’re ready to leave the spot, first unplug the extension lead from the electric hook-up point and then from the vehicle. There's no need to force the plug, as you may damage the motorhome's external connection. On some models, there is sometimes a safety catch to release beforehand to remove it properly. Before you leave, remember to put all your equipment back in the vehicle. Now you know how a motorhome's electric hook up works and how to safely connect to electricity!
