Marikina River Dike Wall Extension The Great Wall of Marikina River The Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project, a collaboration between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is in its fourth phase. This phase focuses on strengthening flood defenses in Metro Manila by constructing a significant flood wall along the Marikina River. Since 2000, JICA has been a key partner in improving the river channel. The project includes infrastructure such as revetments, flood walls, movable weirs, and gate structures to protect low-lying areas from flooding. Public information campaigns and the creation of flood hazard maps are also key components to support disaster risk reduction. The DPWH and JICA are overseeing the construction of dikes and ripraps, river widening, and the building of water pumping stations.
