The first new moon around this time period constitutes our Navajo New Year and the month of October for our Navajo People. This new moon also marks the beginning of our winter ceremonies, specifically the five- and nine-night ceremonies. As you all know, Shiprock Fair kicks off the nine-night ceremony (ye'ii bicheii). This information is for all non-Navajo and Navajo relatives and colleagues in the entire district and communities to ensure that respect is given and followed as part of our cultural education. 1. Do not take pictures of the Ye'iis. They will be going around our local communities, as this is their protocol for receiving offerings from our people in the form of food, money, pollen, and cultural artifacts. We see them as our deities, so we give them offerings in this form as a sign of respect for them and what they represent. You may see them along roads, at stores, schools, homes, and other locations. Do not be scared, they are making their sacred presence known and seeking these offerings. 2. If you have any questions, please contact the Intercultural Community Outreach department. Thank you
