On Saturday 10 September, I was at the Kirklees Light Railway's annual steam gala. The gala featured the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway's German-built 4-6-2 No.11 "Black Prince", and two puny 4-4-0 locomotives built by Cagney Bros, No.44 from Rhyl Miniature Railway & No.1904 which had been imported from Peru! They were supported by the KLR's home fleet 2-6-2T "Fox", 0-6-4ST "Badger", 0-4-4-0GT "Owl" and "Jay" ("Hawk" was out of action folowing an incident in July). At Clayton West, Black Prince rests in the far platform, being observed and photographed. Then, the two Cagney 4-4-0's arrived with the shuttle from Cuckoo's Nest. There then follows a series of manoeuvres on the turntable, as the two 4-4-0's are turned as the carriage is pushed manually in order to swap lines. The Cagneys move off to fill up on coal and water "Owl" then arrives from Shelley on a service train. Soon after this "Black Prince" moves away to be coupled onto the next departure, followed by the Cagney's and their shuttle carriage. The Cagneys stop in the platform to collect passengers. Meanwhile, "Owl" moves off its train onto the turntable ready to be turned. With "Black Prince" coupled on, it was time for a ride up the line, right behind the locomotive. We are seen departing Clayton West, past the workshops and over the road bridge, before climbing its way up. © 60007Gresley
