After an introduction immitating the koto sound by pizzicato in the first violin, the first theme making use of a traditional Japanese scale is harmonized on a descending chromatic bassline. The next section begins with the lyrical second theme in the first violin, which is in dialogue with the cello. The second theme is then variated into a scherzo-like transitional passage, bringing in the climactic section of the piece. The first theme is recapitulated as the subject of the fugue by the second violin, with the viola playing the second theme as the countersubject. Following a sudden pause after the fugal stretto, the first theme is restated in pizzicato by the second violin. The quartet is concluded by an ambiguous quintal chord.
