After a 5-year break the Monza Rally Show has been put back on the calendar for 2024. This year's edition was promoted by Pirelli in collaboration with WRC, the FIA and Monza Circuit in order to celebrate the brand and the end of their deal as a sole tire supplier for the World Rally Championship. For this reason, the three top teams of the series were invited to participate with their Rally1 cars and some of their factory drivers. According to reports prior to the event, all three teams would have brought the 2024 versions of their cars as, following a recent announcement, the premier class will be deprived of the electric system as early as next season. The Monza Rally Show would also have been the right occasion to say goodbye to the Rally1 Hybrid machines. Small digression as a reminder. The Rally1 technical regulations were introduced in 2022. The main feature of this rally class was the addition of a electric power system, linked to the 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in use on the previous WRC Plus cars and able to capture energy during braking, storing it in a 3.9 kWh battery. The recovered energy was then deployed via a 100kW (134 hp) electric motor which, combined with the 380 horsepower of the combustion engine, allowed the car to have more than 500 hp available during acceleration. Unlike the push-to-pass systems of other motorsport championships with hybrid engines, drivers in WRC instead deploy the electrical energy through an automatic system dictated by pre-programmed engine maps. Now that this 87 kilograms system will be abandoned next year, the Rally1 cars will be powered by the sole 1.6-liter unit and their minimum weight will be lowered from 1,260 to 1,180 kilograms. The size of the air restrictor will be reduced from 36mm to 35mm to maintain an equivalent power-to-weight ratio between the 2024 and 2025 vehicles. Given the short period of time between the announcement of these changes and the first round of the 2025 championship, the cars will remain almost unchanged from an aesthetic point of view (even if Hyundai just said they had an 'Evo' version of thier i20 N Hybrid in development but that has been put on hold for now). The main differences will be noticed in the rear area of the cars, starting from the bumper which will no longer have any vents (and cooling fans) to allow the excess heat generated by the hybrid system to escape. Some other changes could be linked to the air intakes located near the rear windows, used both to bring fresh air to the brakes and, of course, to the hybrid system. The green/red LEDs which were used to indicate whether the car was safe to be touched by the public or the stewards, in the event of a breakdown or accident, will also disappear All these last considerations made me notice that both Toyota and Hyundai took advantage of the 2024 Monza Rally Show to clock up some miles and further develop their non-hybrid cars ahead of the 2025 WRC Rallye Monte-Carlo. Watch Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo in action during this special rally event, held both on the GP layout and the old oval circuit, as well as in some paved roads inside the track! #Hyundaii20NRally1 #Hyundaii20N #WRC2025 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have to thank my friends and youtubers @Italiansupercarvideo and @NM2255 for the great collaboration done.
