Endometrial cancer is on the rise – a 57% increase in diagnoses from 2007 to 2017. In this seminar, presented on September 30, 202, you'll learn about endometrial cancer from doctor Carol Brown, MD, FACS, a gynecologic cancer surgeon and Chief Health Equity Officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Brown is a proud voice for people of color who speaks often about inequality in healthcare, especially in minority communities. Black women and women of color have a 20% lower 5-year survival rate from endometrial cancer than white women. 5-year endometrial cancer survival is about 60% in black women, while 85% in white women. The reasons may be because of differences in tumor biology and differences in how doctors treat their patients. The number one sign of endometrial cancer is irregular bleeding. In this seminar, you'll also learn when to reach out to your doctor to catch endometrial cancer early, when it's easier to treat. MSK is working hard to improve endometrial cancer survival rates in all patients. Dr. Brown speaks of potential solutions to this endometrial cancer disparity, one of them being the Endometrial Cancer Equity program at MSK. She is involved in the programs' community outreach and engagement to promote early diagnosis, get more people to join clinical trials, and tout the improved treatment options. Immunotherapy in particular is a new form of treatment where clinical trials are important for black women to join.
