'My heart's broken': Elephants Delicatessen CEO speaks about fire on NW location

Portland Fire investigators say a 2-alarm fire at Elephants Delicatessen in Northwest Portland was “human-caused." The fire that started about 1 a.m. Tuesday heavily damaged Elephants Delicatessen, one of Northwest Portland’s longest-standing restaurants, leaving its chief executive officer grappling with the loss while vowing the business will not abandon the location or its employees. Martin Macclanan, CEO of Elephant’s Delicatessen, said the fire began outside the building, spread inside and then moved to the roof. He said the damage includes areas that were “burned and charred,” and that what remains has either smoke or water damage. Macclanan said he arrived at the fire shortly after it started and was emotional seeing the longtime restaurant in that condition.
