Here’s a quick summary of the steps involved in cataract surgery: The patients pupil is dilated and local anesthesia is given to numb the eye. Two small incisions are made in the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye. The eye is filled with a protective gel called viscoelastic to inflate the eye and protect the cornea. A circular opening is made in the front of the capsule that surrounds the cataract. A small probe is inserted into the eye and emits ultrasound waves that break up the cataract into tiny pieces, which are then removed through suction. All remaining pieces are removed. A new, artificial lens is inserted and centered into the capsular bag to replace the cataract and correct vision. The incisions are hydrated using a self-sealing technique.
