What happens when you're in a dispute over a sum of money and the trial happens in the judge's chambers, instead of a courtroom? The setting for your hearing is often in a less formal setting, like an office, but nevertheless, it is still a court of law. You can expect a few differences when a county court hearing is in a judge’s chambers, including the judge dressed in a business suit or attire, rather than formal robes. You will be brought in by a court usher, as usual, and the judge will be referred to as ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’ and must not be interrupted when they are speaking. Their role is to make sure everyone behaves themselves and that everything is dealt with correctly. The person bringing the case is known as the ‘Claimant’ and the person with the case brought against them is the ‘Defendant’. You may both be known as the ‘Parties’ or ‘Litigants’. You can bring legal representation, but you can also present your case without it. The judge will lead you through the process and you will present your case, with all your evidence to hand.
