Rainier School District responds to sex abuse charges quietly filed against teacher

The Rainier School District says it followed protocol when a former Rainier High School art teacher was indicted on sex abuse charges for allegedly touching three female students. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office arrested 33-year-old Stephen Chase Cohen in the summer of 2022. His jury trial on six counts of third-degree sex abuse has been postponed multiple times. The case was not made public at the time. The school district has not responded to questions about whether it informed the parents of children in Cohen's classroom about the charges. "Mr. Stephen Cohen is no longer employed with the Rainier School District. The district followed the appropriate legal protocols at the time of the incident. Because this is both a legal and a personnel matter, the district is unable to provide further details," a written response from the school district reads. On Sept. 16, the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office announced it had arrested Rainier High School Principal, 49-year-old Jeremy Williams, on child pornography charges.
