I had a plan... really, I did. But the bees were swarmy. So I got to do my first Taranov Split. I haven't had so much fun since the recent colony removal from the barn! A Taranov split is designed to split a colony in a way that has many similarities to what the bees do in a swarm -- so that the colony that had "decided" to swarm will conclude that they already HAVE swarmed. It is also especially good for getting a colony started in a different type of hive. That isn't what I was doing here, but I could have had the swarm move into a Langstroth, top bar, or Comfort hive. This was almost a textbook example of a Taranov split -- and more fun than I should have been allowed to have! I'll try to keep you updated on the outcome! 00:00 Introduction 03:40 First queen cell spotted 13:22 I think I missed another queen cell... 14:00 Another queen cell? 14:30 Continuing with my plan to take a frame as the start of a cell starter/finisher. 17:00 Starting to look swarmy at the far end of the hive... watch that space... 18:25 Another queen cell spotted 20:30 Another queen cell... 20:50 Deliberation: What to do? 21:20 Is this the start of a swarm? 22:40 Explaining and beginning the Taranov split 23:45 Shaking bees! 24:20 Accelerated 10x 25:20 Adding frames to the nuc 27:45 Replacing frames in the main hive 30:00 The march from the ramp to the nuc is beginning 33:35 Closing the hive 35:45 Watching and waiting 36:45 High-speed (10x) 37:10 Giving them time to do their thing 39:40 The aftermath... a few hours later. #bee #beekeeping #layens #texasbeekeeping #taranovsplit #swarming #layenshivemanagement #backyardbeekeeper #treatmentfreebeekeeping #treatmentfree
