Welcome back to another video! I’m going to try my hand at another style of video I’ve not done before and that’s reviewing! I’ve never taken the time to public review any poetry before, so I’m a little nervous myself! I want to be very careful with what I say and do here because I always have tremendous amounts of respect for people who decide to share their soul with the world, and if ever I have anything bad to say I do everything I can to hide the poets identity, but with this obviously I can’t so I’ll be very considerate with my words, and I AM SO DAMN CONFLICTED WITH THIS COLLECTION! So lets get into it! Bella Thorne has always been a person that intrigues me. Before reading this collection I thought we shared a lot in common, but so honest are these pages that actually, I realised I only have a little in common, though I do still see a kindred spirit in her somewhere. I genuinely was blown away by her honesty and cannot applaud her enough for it, and I’ll get into that a bit more in a minute. As I said before, I commend anyone that shares their work and soul openly and Bella has gone above and beyond here, but there are things that niggled at me so I am going to do my best to express that respectfully. To begin with, what really stood out for me was the pure rawness, expression, and emotion that fills this book. I recently complained that a lot of modern poetry is so lacking in those departments, but Bella definitely breaks that mould in this book by really opening up. She’s said that the first draft of her poems are always the heart of her writing, and I agree with that completely. I’ve often found it in my own writing. However, that is also this collection’s downfall. I think when you subscribe to the notion that the first draft is the best and truest, you end up neglecting edits. And where I think Bella and I have both gone wrong in pursuit of authenticity and heart, is we’ve included poems into our collections that really do not serve a purpose and are essentially page fillers. Which brings me nicely onto formatting. Now I’m really really struggling with this, because on the one hand I love the aesthetic and formatting. Scanned straight from the typewriter, with crumpled paper creasing and everything, this collection makes you feel like your reading each poem straight off of Bella’s floor as she discards one poem and moves onto the next. But one thing I absolutely hate about modern poetry collections, why must these collection be filled with so much blank space!? We do not have infinite resources people! Also, Bella says that she wanted this collection totally raw and open, and intentionally unedited, which ties in with who she is and how she wants to present herself, but it does result in a lot of pieces being hard to take in… having to keep stopping the flow to work out what was actually being said, but you know… for some people that may not be a problem. There are so many what the f. moments in this collection, that left me wondering why I was continuing to read on. But having watched Bella talk about this book, and listen to her reading some of the pieces… it was always such a pleasure to read the pieces when she actually sat down and released herself. I genuinely think, the way she is unashamedly herself, and so willing to give herself up to us she could be a brilliant poet. Unfortunately for this particular collection there are too many poems that just come across as totally meaningless, or at the very least an inside joke that just left me unable to interpret anything from them. Bella clearly has a lot to give and I hope, like it has me, something clicks inside of her and she decides to really craft out her next few poems because I have no doubt she will clean the floor with them if she does.
