Looking to stock your planted tank or planted aquarium with reliable cold water aquarium plants? In this video, I’m showcasing the top growers from my unheated setups, which hover around 18°C (64°F) during winter. Unlike generic species profiles, this advice is based on my firsthand experience—so you’ll see each plant thriving in real conditions. Pearlweed (Micranthemum glomeratum) Despite cooler temperatures, pearlweed grows rapidly, often “pearling” under even modest lighting. I don’t use CO₂, and it still overtakes my tanks with ease. Beware of melt if you buy it in in-vitro cups and have ammonia above 0.25 ppm—steady parameters are key. Dwarf Sag (Sagittaria subulata) Great as a foreground in larger tanks or midground in nanos, dwarf sag spreads via runners and tolerates chilly climates like the UK, Japan, and Germany. Even with low-tech lighting and no fertilizer, it’s stayed robust all winter long. Taiwan Moss (Taxiphyllum alternans) I kept this moss in a small tub by a window through winter with no liquid ferts. It remained lush and healthy—proof that minimal care can still yield impressive results. It’s versatile for carpets or attaching to wood. Helanthium tenellum ‘Green’ This North American plant spreads quickly by sending out stolons, making it an excellent low-tech carpeting choice. I’m growing it in different water hardness levels and lighting intensities—no added CO₂ or ferts—and it’s thriving. Littorella uniflora Native to Europe, this small foreground plant easily handles room temperatures. Though it spreads slower than Helanthium, it’s still extremely low-maintenance. Perfect for anyone looking for a subtle, natural look. Eleocharis parvula A short, grass-like plant that’s widely tolerant of cooler conditions. It’s taken time to establish, but once it does, it sends out new shoots consistently. No special fertilizers or fancy lights required. Anubias & Bucephalandra Both are hardy epiphytes that attach to rock or wood. I’ve grown them under low light in soft and hard water, and they’ve remained carefree. Growth is slow but steady—even over winter. Stem Plants & Floaters Rotala rotundifolia, Hygrophila polysperma, duckweed, and water lettuce all flourish in cooler setups. Stem plants are easy to propagate by trimming and replanting, while floaters help stabilize water quality. Enjoy the video and discover how these cold water aquarium plants can transform your planted tank or planted aquarium—no heater, CO₂, or expensive gear necessary!
