In today’s video, we’re thrilled to be joined by Kaitlyn Koenig, an elite-level shooter sponsored by B&P Ammunition, Elite Shotguns, and Vero Beach. Kaitlyn brings not only years of competitive experience to the table but also a clear and approachable teaching style that makes even the most challenging target presentations feel within reach. Filmed at the beautiful Vero Beach Sporting Clays in Vero Beach, Florida, this lesson focuses on one of the most deceptive and difficult targets in sporting clays—the Battue. Kaitlyn walks viewers through everything they need to know about successfully breaking Battue targets, which are known for their thin, flat shape and dramatic movement. Although they are similar in diameter to standard targets, Battues are much thinner and lighter. This unique construction allows them to flip or roll into a vertical position in mid-flight before dropping rapidly, creating a fast and unpredictable trajectory. Because of the Battue’s rapid descent and erratic flight path, they demand precise timing and a sharp eye. In this video, Kaitlyn explains how she approaches Battue presentations using two different methods: the Swing-Through method and the Pull-Away method. She provides a detailed breakdown of when and why she chooses each technique, helping shooters understand how to read the target and select the best approach in real time. With the Swing-Through method, Kaitlyn emphasizes staying relaxed, maintaining momentum, and accelerating through the target. With the Pull-Away method, she explains the importance of establishing a hold point, matching the speed of the target, and smoothly pulling away to create lead. Battue targets are often used in sporting clays courses to simulate the flight of fast-flying game birds. Because of their tendency to drop quickly and their narrow profile, they can be hard to see and even harder to hit. Kaitlyn shares practical tips on how to anticipate the Battue’s final movement, manage visual focus, and time the shot for maximum success. Whether you’re new to sporting clays or looking to refine your skills, her insights are sure to make a difference in your game. Thank you for watching this episode of The Clay Lab.
