Crosby (1820–1915) Music: Phoebe P. Knapp (1839–1908) Written: 1873 Story: Fanny J. Crosby, a prolific hymn writer who was blind from infancy, wrote the lyrics to “Blessed Assurance” in 1873. The inspiration came when Phoebe Palmer Knapp, a friend and music teacher, played a new tune she had composed on her organ and asked Crosby what she thought. Crosby immediately responded with the words “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!” and the hymn was born. The hymn expresses joy, confidence, and spiritual assurance in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Its refrain — “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long” — emphasizes a life lived in faith and gratitude. Since its composition, Blessed Assurance has become one of the most enduring and beloved hymns in Christian worship, sung in countless churches around the world. Lyrics: 1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. 2 Perfect communion, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight. Angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. [Refrain] 3 Perfect submission, all is at rest. I in my Savior am happy and bless’d, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. [Refrain]
