Secrets of the Paleogene Epoch. Earth After Dinosaurs - Documentary The fall of a massive meteor near the present-day city of Chicxulub forever changed the Earth. 66 million years ago, all dinosaur species became extinct, and our planet never saw them again. The mighty T-Rex also left our Earth, unable to overcome such a challenge. However, a new era emerged, where mammals took the lead. Thanks to their relatively small size, they successfully survived the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. The Paleogene is the era we want to tell you about. During this period, the climate cooled down and became drier compared to previous epochs. However, this trend was occasionally interrupted by warm periods, such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. It's worth noting that the Paleogene is subdivided into three main epochs: Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene. Due to the colder climate, ice caps and glaciers formed on high mountain peaks. Despite this, there was an increase in flowering plants and insects, which were almost non-existent before. Bony fishes dominated the world's seas and oceans. A significant number of cetaceans started appearing on land for the first time. The Paleogene period marked a flourishing of placental mammals, forming the basis of the new fauna on our planet. Among them were herbivorous marsupials, resembling modern kangaroos and marsupial bears.
