I have priorly addressed improper resting position of the cervical spine, the dreaded hinge. Well, this time the I will address hinging during cervical movement. It is very important to extend the c-spine without any hinging, as such may occlude and compromise the vertebral arteries and veins, contributing to migraines as well as obviously neck pain, disc compression and muscular dysfunction. Sometimes I see patients who have worked on their neck postures and aren't half bad in resting position, but once I have them extend or rotate the neck, terrible hinging reveals itself. This can be cured by learning how to 1: extend the head while fixing the neck. 2: extending the neck while also extending the lower c-spine as well as the head. This process is often difficult and frustrating for the client as they can't feel the difference, but they'll come along if you keep working on it. Hinging is a silent and subtle cervical assassin. Find it and remove it!!
