"That car is the noisiest thing to come out of Detroit since Martha & The Vandellas" quoted Blanche Devereaux in an episode of "The Golden Girls". She was so right, Martha and her Vandellas had a much harder rock sound than the Supremes or the Temptations, to wit "Heatwave", "Dancing In The Streets" and "Nowhere To Hide" They were also the first benefactors of the Holland-Dozier-Holland hit machine with two hits in 1963 a year before the Supremes had their first hit. Motown helped to revive the R&B genre so much so, that when the chart was restarted in 1965 the first song to be christned #1 was The Temptations wihth "My Girl" that spent six weeks at the top and began a new era of the previously named "race music" that took over the popular music audience. The group got its start with members Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford and Gloria williams who recruited Martha. In 1962 Williams left the group and Martha took over the lead and led them to chart gold. They finally had a #1 R&B hit with "Jimmy Mack" in 1967. Wikipedia is incorrect in stating that "Heatwave" was #1 for four weeks.
