Tannhäuser, full title Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg, (Tannhäuser and the Minnesängers' Contest at Wartburg), is an 1845 opera in three acts, with music and text by Richard Wagner (WWV 70 in the catalog of the composer's works). It is based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the mythologized medieval German minnesinger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, as well as redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's work. The opera remains a staple of the major opera house repertoire in the 21st century. Here's the overture. I have already used the pictures of the small church for my video of the Pilgrims Choir, so it was obvious to include them here at the given places. The castle that can be seen in the video is the Wartburg. The Wartburg is a castle originally built in the Middle Ages. It is situated on a precipice of 410 meters (1,350 ft) to the southwest of and overlooking the town of Eisenach, in the state of Thuringia, Germany. It was the home of St. Elisabeth of Hungary, the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible into German, the site of the Wartburg festival of 1817 and the supposed setting for the possibly legendary singer's war. It was an important inspiration for Ludwig II when he decided to build Neuschwanstein Castle. Have fun.
