Does this green leafy plant look like a CACTUS to you?! It has lot's of bright green, juicy-looking foliage as well as somewhat oddly-shaped and strange berries or fruits - and it has some beautiful but rather unusual, rose-like flowers too! It grows very tall and tree-like, and has thick, woody non-succulent stems. BUT, it also sports some incredible SPINES which grow radially from AREOLES (...which are typical for cacti!). So, what is this STRANGE plant? Is it a cactus after all, or not? YES, this is a member of the CACTUS plant family, the Cactaceae! To be precise, it is a cactus called the Wax Rose or Rose Cactus, going by the most recent scientific name Leuenbergeria bleo (formerly called Pereskia bleo). Very recent molecular DNA studies actually show that these plants are very early SISTERS to our more "typical" desert cacti! (They had formerly once also been considered as potential early cacti. i.e. direct descendants to ALL members of the cacti family - however this has not been confirmed. Instead, their very early, sibling-sister relationship has). Unlike the vast majority of their cactus relatives, they do NOT have fleshy succulent stems with stomata (tiny pores) in their epidermis, or outer skin - but, very much like all other cacti, they do have spines and areoles. And, they grow in humid-wet forests rather than in predominantly dry and hot deserts! Isn't that quite crazy and truly fascinating? So, a rare, truly unique and very special CACTUS! The plants shown in this video are growing in the Singapore Botanic Garden - check out my recent video tour (see the link in this video) to visit these awesome gardens and the many beautiful cacti and other succulents growing there ...amazingly, in a fully tropical, monsoonal climate with year-round high humidity, heavy and almost daily rainfall and warm temperatures, day and night!!
