Kathmandu Durbar Square is a historic square located in the heart of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, the others being Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Durbar Square translates to "Palace Square" in English. Kathmandu Durbar Square holds great cultural, historical, and architectural significance. It was once the royal palace of the Malla and Shah kings who ruled over Nepal. The square is surrounded by ancient palaces, temples, shrines, and courtyards, reflecting the rich artistic and architectural traditions of Nepal. Some notable attractions within Kathmandu Durbar Square include: Hanuman Dhoka Palace: This palace complex served as the royal residence of the Nepalese monarchs. It consists of various courtyards, including the Nasal Chowk, Mul Chowk, and Mohan Chowk. Kumari Ghar: Also known as the House of the Living Goddess, this is a unique three-story building that houses the Kumari, a young girl revered as the living embodiment of the Hindu goddess Taleju. Visitors can sometimes catch a glimpse of the Kumari through a window. Basantapur Tower: Also called the Minnath, this nine-story tower provides panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. It offers a stunning vantage point to observe the surrounding architecture and the cityscape. Temples and Shrines: Numerous temples and shrines are scattered throughout the square. Some notable ones include the Taleju Temple, Jagannath Temple, and Kal Bhairav Temple. These religious structures showcase intricate wood carvings, metalwork, and stone sculptures. Kathmandu Durbar Square was severely damaged during the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. However, ongoing efforts are being made to restore and preserve the heritage sites within the square. It remains a popular tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the world who are interested in exploring Nepal's rich cultural and historical heritage. #durbarsquare #nepal , #kathmandudurbarsquare , #kathmandu , #visitnepal , #explorenepal , #basantapur , #kathmandunepal , #kathmanduvalley , #travelnepal #durbarsquare , #basantapurdurbarsquare , #nepaltour
