Rather than lectures or presentations, the Roundtable is built around open discussion. Panelists and audience members respond to recent local news stories and use them as starting points for deeper conversation. This first event was held on February 20 at CIC Fukuoka, where 33 participants representing 18 nationalities gathered for the inaugural session. The discussion covered topics including Fukuoka City’s record municipal budget, education spending, transportation changes, the Queen Beetle ferry scandal, inbound tourism pressures, housing affordability, immigration and integration, healthcare access, and the evolving role of international residents in the region. Kyushu Roundtable is designed as a recurring forum that prioritizes depth over quantity. Each session focuses on a small number of themes, with discussion led by rotating panelists and contributions from the audience. The aim is to encourage informed dialogue, strengthen community connections, and help bridge perspectives between Kyushu’s international residents and local institutions. The events themselves are intentionally in-person only to preserve the quality of discussion. Selected clips and highlights are shared here to capture key moments from the conversation. Future sessions will continue to bring together professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, and community members interested in the future of Kyushu. MC: Nick Szasz, CEO/Publisher, Fukuoka Now Commentator: Kirk Patterson, President of Konpira Yacht Services Commentator: Evan Kirby, Founder of Genki Japanese & Culture School.
