The National Instructors College Abilonino is the only college currently training TVET teachers in the country. Found in Kole district Abilonino was opened together with 10 other polytechnics in 2001 to address the scarcity of Instructors in the BTVET sub-sector. Other polytechnics were later closed down and Abilonino was elevated to a National Instructors College in 2014 making it the only government institution of that kind in the entire country. Leaders now want the institution be granted a university status to train bachelor’s students. Established in 2001 to address the scarcity of Instructors in the BTVET sub-sector, Abilonino was among 11 other Community Polytechnic Colleges across the country. The college was upgraded from a community polytechnic to a National Instructors College in 2014 while others were closed down in 2004. Seated on 41 acres of land in kole district, 40km away from Lira town, Abilonino National Instructors College has been training trainers of TVET institutions for over two decades now. The enterprises that include mushroom growing, dairy, piggery, poultry and horticulture among others is to help students grasp hands-on skills. Patrick Apita is an alumni of the college. Now a lecturer Apita graduated from Abilonino in 2008 with a diploma in teacher training. He says the institution has grown to greatness and deserves better.
