Over the last few years, there has been increased recognition of the value of including the voice of lived experience in dementia-related projects. Yet, there are few organizations willing to pay persons with lived experience for their expertise. Dawn Baxter, a care partner, will share her experience as a Lived Experience Facilitator in a paid role with the Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) Provincial Coordinating Office. Mary Beth Wighton, co-chair of Dementia Advocacy Canada, will speak to the role of lived experience during COVID-19. Some of the tools developed through provincial advisory conversations will also be shared. Dawn Baxter is a part-time Behavioural Supports Ontario Lived Experienced Facilitator. For this role, she draws on her lengthy experiences as an advocate for people living with dementia and care partners. Her work includes sharing her experiences as a care partner as it relates to such topics as quality of life, culinary experiences, program development, and young-onset dementia. She has been involved in numerous conferences as both a participant and a speaker. And has participated as the role of: Support Person for the Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia for the Federal Minister of Health. Through her participation in numerous projects and committees, she has become quite knowledgeable in authentically engaging persons with lived experience and culture change. Mary Beth Wighton lives in Southampton, Ontario and was diagnosed in 2012 with probable frontotemporal dementia at the age of 45. Since then, she has become an advocate for people living with dementia and is well-known as a pioneer to advance the rights of persons with dementia. Mary Beth is involved in numerous cross-sector projects involving research; policy development; including being a member on the Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia and Alzheimer Society of Canada Dementia and COVID-19 Task Force. Mary Beth is co-chair of Dementia Advocacy Canada and is a part-time Behavioural Supports Ontario Lived Experience Facilitator. Dementia Advocacy Canada Dementia Advocacy Canada (DAC) is a grassroots group of people living with dementia and family care partners who want to influence policy, inform program development, and improve access to supports and services for people impacted by dementia across Canada. The Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) initiative was created to enhance health care services for older adults in Ontario with or at risk of responsive behaviours / personal expressions associated with dementia, mental health, substance use and/or other neurological conditions. The initiative also provides enhanced family care partner support in the community, in long-term care or wherever the individual and/or care partner(s) reside.
