December 13th 2025 marked the final day of HST operations on the Western Region, albeit in shorter form, after 49 years. These "Castle" sets spent their last couple of years confined to Devon and Cornwall, operating services mostly between Plymouth and Penzance, with the odd trip up to Exeter. This video is a throwback to more abundant times in April 2023, when GWR still operated these units to Bristol and Cardiff, and Cross Country were still a few months away from withdrawing their own full set HSTs. It's a video that I never got round to editing at the time, and with my overall retirement from shooting video, it was left to gather dust in the digital library of my hard drives. Fast forward to 2025, and now seems like an appropriate time to dust off the footage, and have it see the light of day. I spent the day with @frontlinesteam making our way up and down the Somerset Levels between Bristol and Taunton, trying to catch at many HSTs as we could before the GWR diagrams were initially reduced the following month. The sets that featured in this video were:- GW03 - 43154 'Compton Castle' & 43158 'Kingswear Castle' GW07 - 43093 'Berkeley Castle' & 43188 'Newport Castle' GW08 - 43172 'Tiverton Castle' & 43194 'Okehampton Castle' GW10 - 43040 'Berry Pomeroy Castle' & 43153 'Chûn Castle' GW11 - 43097 'Castle Drogo' & 43187 'Cardiff Castle' GW14 - 43186 'Taunton Castle' & 43198 'Driver Brian Cooper/Driver Stan Martin' GW15 - 43016 'Powderham Castle' & 43156 'Maen Castle' XC01 - 43301 & 43303 XC02 - 43378 & 43321
