Mahler, Richard Strauss, Busch, and others had resurrected his operas and symphonies, and scholars like E.J. Dent and Einstein had worked to promote the greatness of his music. But as far as piano music was concerned, most pianists ignored it. Mozart’s piano sonatas were regarded as teaching material for children, and it was out of the question for any serious, reputable pianist to approach them seriously on stage. Even those who occasionally played them performed them charmingly, as exercises in digital virtuosity, which seemed self-evident. It was an era when Mozart’s piano sonatas were believed to contain nothing more than scales, arpeggios, and simple themes. In short, Mozart was considered only the composer of the Turkish March, an encore piece—and nothing more. (At least among pianists who thought Mozart had depth and grandeur, wasn’t Artur Schnabel the first?) Backhaus, who was regarded as a Beethoven interpreter, surprised the world by suddenly playing Mozart. The reason was probably the approach of the bicentenary of the composer’s birth. That year, he even gave a recital entirely devoted to Mozart. But what was astonishing was not just that he played Mozart. The Mozart he played was by no means the rococo figure in a red jacket: it was a deep, vehement Mozart, driven by authentic passion, a “great” Mozart, and his playing was a hymn to that. The familiar image of a “cute,” “rolling pearls like marbles” Mozart disappeared completely. And as was his habit, Backhaus, with lips closed to one side, silently presented on the piano what he considered the true face of Mozart. 🔥🎧 Full Album available // Mozart: Piano Sonatas, Rondos & Fantasia by Wilhelm Backhaus 🔥🎧 Choose my streaming platform: https://lnk.to/mozartpianoworksbackhaus Other Album available // Mozart: Andante & Adagio from Piano Sonatas by Chantal Stigliani 🎧 Qobuz https://cutt.ly/5eKEJMIb Tidal https://cutt.ly/DeKEKtl2 🎧 Apple Music https://cutt.ly/zeKEKhHf Amazon Music https://cutt.ly/XeKEKHix 🎧 Deezer https://cutt.ly/5eKEKYJE Spotify https://cutt.ly/oeKEK4VS 🎧 Youtube Music https://cutt.ly/5eKELj7k Soundcloud https://cutt.ly/heKELLci Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart PLAYLIST (reference recordings): • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
