Over the course of his life, Beethoven composed 5 cello sonatas. A Major cello sonata was composed during 1807-8, during his productive middle period in Vienna, and it is often described as the first cello sonata to give 2 instruments equal importance. This productive middle period was also a time when Beethoven faced increasing deafness. His pianist career ended with the celebrated concert on 22 December 1808. This A Major sonata was premiered by a cellist Nikolaus Kraft, and a pianist Dorothea von Ertmann, a student of Beethoven on 5 March 1809. This sonata is formally the most expansive of Beethoven's 5 cellos sonatas. It is very melodic, positive, humorous and joyful, and was successful with audiences from the beginning.
